LIVE REVIEWS :

INTERITUS DEI originally formed as a hardcore act, but by the release of "Unholy" in 2002 they had fully switched to a Gothic band incorporating elements of Power, Progressive and straight-up Heavy Metal. It's not quite as original as that description sounds, but I also can't really think of any direct soundalikes. As is so popular now in Gothic Metal, we have a trained female singer - operatic, but alto instead of soprano - and a male growler. Throw in a violinist and a surprisingly good/showy lead guitarist and we're cooking with fire.
"Isis Enthroned" seems like a fairly ordinary gothic rocker, a bit more up-tempo than you'd expect form the style, complete with the occasional progressive touch and a guitar surprisingly willing to solo. Unfortunately, one of the characteristic problems of the band is apparent as soon as bassist/vocalist Bogdan Boeru starts singing. While the instruments enjoy far better quality than on the MP3s I originally heard (on MP3.com, so legally, of course), but vocalists Ana Mladinovici and especially Boeru suffer from defective mastering. Ana's voice seems to lose some lustre, though honestly it's not clear if it's the mixing alone of it she's just not strong enough, while Boeru's monochromatic half-grunt, half-shout (the only remnant of their Hardcore days) seems to overpower the mic.
"Forbidden Epitaph" stumbles, but "Berzerkir" is remarkable for a repeated bridge that almost sounds like something off of ANDROMEDA's "Extension Of The Wish" before breaking into powerful verses. This song’s parts are betting than the whole, as there's not as much flow as one would like. The next three songs are a bit of a slow patch in the album, literally and figuratively, but it’s the calm before the storm.
"Bats In The Attic" smashes into a listener lulled into a sense of false security by the previous tracks. Just listen to guitarist Bogden Costea absolutely FLY on that solo. Somewhere Ross the Boss and Karl Logan are shaking their heads and saying "Damn, that kid is FAST!" Then Ana and, to a lesser extent, Boeru take it up and continue to run with great vocal lines, all while Costea injects shredding guitar runs. Awesome stuff. I absolutely love this song. There's even a little neo-classical solo used as a bridge.
"Estuans Interius" continues the goodness as Ana and a guest vocalist share a quick operatic intro before we get another typical and good INTERITUS DEI song. "Moondust" slows things down, but shows up “Demonic” (which is in the same style) by being interesting. The rest is acceptable to pretty good, except for a part on “In Praise Of Lilith” where Ana really just sounds bored.
Since this album, Ana Mladinovici, Bogdan Costea and drummer Cristi Barla left to form the Power Metal band MAGICA. Violinist Traian Boala also left, but I couldn't find any information about his current whereabouts. INTERITUS DEI hasn't released anything since. Both of these bits of news are pretty sad, as this is a rather good band. The musicianship is top notch without too much wankery and, while they're not out on the edge, they are distanced enough from your typical Gothic Metal act to have their own identity. It's not perfect, but overall this is pretty good. (Online February 19, 2006) |

Interitus Dei: Unholy
Review by: Felix http://www.statikmajik.com/gd/reviews/interitus-dei_unholy.php
The first thing someone who has not heard Interitus Dei before is going to notice is that they have six members, and listening to "Unholy" I am given a strong impression that had they kept in the direction they were going in we'd be seeing a group larger than Haggard (which, at this time, has roughly nineteen members). I'll spare your time and outright say that Interitus Dei plays doom metal, which in this case is a mix of classical instruments and some early 80's metal. If you don't like either of those, don't bother with this album.
If you do, then you'll agree that this is some really, really fucking good shit. "Unholy" opens with some very well-produced synth lines, and the only reason I'm certain they're not real instruments is because I'm fuckin' magic. When I first heard Interitus Dei, it was in two sample MP3's they posted somewhere and I decided to buy an album after hearing them. What I discovered, however, was that those samples were pre-mastered versions of the songs. One major change is that, on the album, the vocalist's voice has had bass actually added to it, producing some of the most haunting growls I've ever heard come through my stereo speakers. Interitus Dei shows that purists who insist that editing vocals is a crime can go fuck themselves.
The lead guitars on this album sound really fucking good, too. The distortion seems a little strange on the high notes, which means I can hear the pick actually scrape against the strings, but somehow this doesn't annoy me. The bass is deep throughout the album, which doesn't move as slow as you'd expect from a band in this genre. This isn't the sort of doom metal you mope around and bitch about your life while listening to, either. If you're going to be bitching about anything in life while this album plays, it's going to be that your knife got stuck in someone's forehead and you can't get the damn thing out without bending it.
From opening to close, "Unholy" is in amazing piece of music. The only complaint I have is with the lyrics, which are actually well-written, they just should never have been translated to the English language. The reasoning is simple - their lyricist hasn't quite worked out the concept of verbs and verb transitives, producing a few strange lines in the lyrics. Fortunately, this will go unnoticed by the non anal-retentive listener, so I don't really feel the need to brood much longer upon it. That withstanding, the tenth track, entitled "Moondus"t, is so godamned fucking amazing that even plastic sword-wielding viking metalheads will weep to it.
It's that fucking good.

What an extremly great band this is... Band has called their music "gothic-power metal", but if somebody mention power metal, it reminds me on some bands I really hate and to say that this has nothing to do with "that" power metal... Angelic female vocals are amaizing, sounds even better when sing together with male vocal which is somewhere between growling and screaming. All this is followed with nice guitar melodies, keyboards, viola and technically great played drums. 10 tracks for those who like quality female vocals in metal music. Beginning of revelation! Buy or die!!!

-INTERITUS DEI
A band out of Romania! INTERITUS DEI sent me 2 albums they released the past few years. Musically they play a mix of Gothic, Symphonic and Doom Melodic Metal. Actually they have an own style and although instrumental is sounds pretty good, the weak point are the male vocals. On both their albums 'Unholy' and The end of revelation', the band has a male and a female singer. The female singer doesn't sound too bad, very Gothic/Opera orientated way of singing, like NIGHTWISH and WITHIN TEMPTATION. Some of the songs are also clearly in the style of those bands, so interesting Melodic Female Fronted Power Gothic Metal. The band definitely has potential to become one of the best sounding bands from Eastern Europe. The songs are mostly uptempo progressive Metal and even the choruses are nice. If you want to hear something totally different, then do check out this band asap, because their music is different than any other band on earth!

Queen of the undead *rules* !
From Romania, perhaps not the first place that you would think of for Gothic Metal comes a five-piece powerhouse of rock. Tying together the best elements of this eccentric genre, Interitus Dei (Not the easiest name to remember) is perhaps the best Goth Metal band I have had the pleasure to hear in recent times. Not so screech-reliant as 'Cradle of Filth', and with a meaner attitude than 'Nightwish' the band masters the challenge posed by creating Goth Metal excellently. It is far too easy to fall into over-dramaticism, or to become little more than anguished wailing, but Interitus Dei combines the best elements of showmanship with powerful guitar and choir-esque vocalisation.
Queen of the Undead starts by an introductory synth-melody of eerie proportions, before everything goes to hell (in a nice way) and the guitars start thrashing, the drums pounding till at last the gothic choir starts to sing their story of their queen. Despite how dubious this may actually sound to the casual reader, it becomes something so much better through Interitus Dei and well worth a listen.
My one point of minor criticism is that I wasn't entirely convinced by the male vocalist on first listen, providing the deep, throaty, demonic verse that is so much a feature of much of this genre. Having said that, upon further listening this point was not so evident, so perhaps indeed I am nit-picking what is obviously a track, and a band, of professional proportions. It becomes a cliché to say this amongst reviews here at GOM, but I must say I expect to hear more of these guys in the future.

Eclectic Heart by Interitus Dei - the verse vocals are high and almost strained, banshee-like, but they make it work. However, it's the deep, dark, growling chorus on this one that really does it for me.Check the lyrics on this one too. . It makes me think ofwerebeasts and fallen angels. Even a beast can have an eclectic heart.

Cronica Gorgar
http://lootandplunder.tripod.com

MUSICA REVIEWS:
02.03.2002:
Cocktail "The best!"
Interitus Dei - Unholy (2002)
It is the first idea coming on mind after listening to this opus. Group from Romania, and it, in my opinion, first band from this country, which I have listened to, has left very good impression. The musicians have taken for a basis the best, that is in modern metal music, to be exact, everything that most popular. By places, "Unholy" reminds Nightwish, places Therion, places Haggard. Quite good female vocal, choruses, violin, growling, and sometimes even pseudo-progressive elements ( very popular thing now too). That is present metal mainstream. Interesting, various music, pleasant melodies, is possible to advise to all fans of melodious products. Only lack, perhaps, not so good growling. And in rest... Sweet - sweet candy.

First Word:
Back again for more is Interitus Dei, a solid goth-metal outfit not unfamiliar to this reviewer. Last November I was blown away when I reviewed their track Queen of the Undead right here at GOM. I said then that I expected to hear more of these guys in the future, and today I am not disappointed. In my opinion, here is displayed a fine sense of musicianship and really what this outlandish genre is all about. But is Isis Enthroned on a par with the rest of their work? Let us don our blackest outfits and find out:
Good Points:
Comparable to other Goth-Metal bands, Interitus Dei manage brilliant harmonies without dulling their killer edge. The opening moments are tuned to perfection, as if brought by an otherworldly choir, with perfect execution of the vocals. Meanwhile the guitar track is throbbing and mean whilst maintaining the morose edge. The ‘death' vocals again are used to full effect, the deep, throaty demonic voice that so typifies this genre. It is a voice that grows on you, and I could easily see myself listening to a whole album of the work these guys produce – so kudos. Overall, this is again an impressive piece.
Bad Points:
However, I think there are weak spots, particularly the bridges where the vocals become a little too weak compared to the actual music – this could be easily fixed with a little tweaking on the technical side of things. Some of the synth-work that is occasionally audible is a little out of place, and I feel the song would have worked fine without – for lack of a better word, the synth sounded ‘cheesy'. But these points are fairly minor, and this is again a very dynamic and worthwhile track.
Final Word:
So overall, this the second time I have reviewed this band's work, I am left only to say that my initial feelings about this group has been confirmed by Isis Enthroned. I like these guys so much that they now even have their own dedicated subfolder on my hard-drive – a compliment by any means, I should say. If you're a fan of the gothic side of metal, you surely cannot afford to miss these guys or their music. Over and out.

INTERITUS DEI "Unholy"
Pâna una-alta, Interitus Dei a dat semnalul.
